Red River Gorge
Red River Gorge is where backpackers are born. I've taken dozens of boys here for their first multi-day trip, and it works every single time. The trails are well-marked but challenging enough to feel real. Those sandstone arches? Over 100 of them, each one spectacular. You'll hike 8-10 miles per day through Daniel Boone National Forest, climb rock staircases, camp at primitive sites with actual fire rings. The terrain teaches you what backpacking really is - not a death march, but a rhythm. Wake up, make oatmeal, pack camp, hike, eat lunch with a view, hike more, find tonight's camp, filter water, cook dinner, watch stars. By day three, boys who were nervous on day one are leading navigation. This trip is the gateway drug to the entire Tier 2 and 3 catalog. Master Red River Gorge, and you're ready for anything.
