Appalachian Trail - Great Smokies
The Great Smoky Mountains section of the AT is thru-hikers' favorite - lush forest, high peaks, mountain culture, and shelters every 8-10 miles. You'll hike to Clingmans Dome (highest point on the entire AT), cross the border between Tennessee and North Carolina dozens of times, camp in shelters with thru-hikers telling stories. The terrain is challenging - the Smokies are steep - but the payoff is huge. This is driveable Tier 3, meaning lower cost and easier logistics than western trips. It's the perfect 'proving ground' expedition before flying west. Master this section, and you're ready for anything the AT throws at you.
