Shades State Park
If Turkey Run is the appetizer, Shades is the main course. Same glacial geology, but rougher, steeper, and less developed. The ravines are deeper, the climbs are harder, and there are no wooden ladders holding your hand. This is where I take boys who crushed Turkey Run and want something harder before jumping to Tier 1. The Devil's Punch Bowl trail is legitimately challenging - scrambling over boulders, steep descents, route-finding through tight passages. But it's still car camping with modern amenities, so families can push their comfort zone safely. Consider this 'Tier 0.5' - a bridge trip that builds confidence without requiring backpacking gear.
- Rugged ravines and canyons
- Sandstone cliffs
- More challenging than Turkey Run
- ✓None - but more challenging than typical Tier 0!
